ARM is establishing an internet of things (IoT) platform named Pelion. The platform will include IoT connectivity technology, device management, and data management. ARM is cobbling the platform together with technologies it acquired from its recent purchase of Stream Technologies along with its ARM Mbed Cloud. And it will also integrate the data management technologies from Treasure Data, which ARM acquired this week.

“To deal with data volumes and complexity, businesses need to be able to seamlessly connect and manage their IoT devices, as well as manage their data flows,” wrote Dipesh Patel, president of ARM’s IoT Services Group, in a blog. “ARM has focused on supporting companies with this for several years, but a full solution taking care of all of a company’s data needs, from device-to-data, has only become possible today after we acquired Treasure Data.”

The startup’s technology handles data from any source such as IoT devices, e-commerce systems, or edge devices, giving customers the ability to derive insights from any disparate data mix.

“Treasure Data is the final piece of our IoT enablement puzzle,” said Patel. “Its technology, along with that of another recent acquisition (Stream) for connectivity management, combined with Arm Mbed Cloud and our knowledge of the IoT hardware foundation creates something entirely new. We call it the Arm Pelion IoT Platform.”

ARM is developing the Pelion IoT Platform to work on public and private clouds, on premises, and in hybrid environments. The platform will also provide unified billing across ecosystems.

SDxCentral asked how Pelion relates to ARM’s core competencies as a chip designer. In an email, an ARM spokesperson said, “The Pelion IoT Platform definitely complements our chip design business, and what we’re enabling with our IoT device IP, Kigen SIM solutions, the Platform Security Architecture (PSA), and Mbed OS.”

The company’s IoT device IP helps designers to build the right system on a chip for IoT devices. Arm Kigen provides a portfolio of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) solutions for secure identity of IoT devices. The company’s PSA is a contribution from ARM to the IoT ecosystem to build more secure IoT devices.

Finally, ARM’s Mbed OS is a free, open-source embedded operating system that includes all the necessary features to facilitate the development of IoT connected products.
